Karen Berger, the 2019 Tobacco Businesswoman of the Year and owner of Don Kiki Cigars, proudly defines herself with three words: passion, loyalty, and courage. In her space within the cigar industry, she has become a force to be reckoned with - being not only an experienced retailer but also owning her own brand as well as cultivating tobacco. At the tender age of 18, while studying business administration, Berger saw a way to make money by entering the tobacco industry in Nicaragua. With insufficient funds to cover her school expenses, she opted for employment at a local cigar factory and thus began her career journey. When she first began working in the factory, Berger was assigned the task of rolling tobacco - a job that is rather typical for women employed at such places.
Don Kiki Berger was the proprietor of a factory wherein he supervised male employees bunching cigars and his female staff were responsible for their assembly. Fatefully, her first encounter with him became love at first sight!
As a husband, mentor, and driving force for his business endeavors, Don Kiki Berger made a lasting impact in the cigar industry from Nicaragua. He commenced his brand which was aptly titled ‘Don Kiki Cigars’ after launching private labels all throughout the 1990s. After her beloved Husband’s death in 2014, Mrs.Berger wanted to memorialize him by ensuring that he remained remembered forever through the work of their family company; she absolutely succeeded with honors!
Although mastering the intricacies of tobacco growing and production was a lengthy process, Berger had her heart set on it. Working in a cigar factory proved to be more difficult than anticipated - especially when dealing with wrapper, which is fragile and can tear easily. The experience became the ultimate teacher for Berger as she strived to gain knowledge about all that she produced. From day one, Berger was intent on learning as much of this trade as possible.
