ABOUT TABACALERA A. FUENTE
Arturo Fuente is a well-known brand of handmade cigars that has been around for over 100 years. It was founded by Arturo Fuente, Sr., in 1912 in West Tampa, Florida. Although the company has experienced ups and downs, including a production halt from 1924 to 1946 due to a fire, it has continued to grow steadily. In 2010, it produced 30 million cigars per year at its Dominican Factory and was famous for its hand-rolled cigars.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THIS CIGAR COMPANY
It was previously mentioned that Arturo Fuente, a Cuban, founded a cigar company in Florida in 1912 when he was just 24 years old. He had immigrated from Cuba to the USA in 1902 due to the Spanish-American war. At first, the company operated out of a three-story building where they hand-rolled cigars using materials imported from Cuba. By 1924, the company had thrived and had 500 employees, prompting them to incorporate as Fuente & Co. Unfortunately, production stopped when a fire broke out, causing a devastating loss.
REDEMPTION OF THE FUENTE BRAND
After a fire incident, Fuente was unable to recover immediately. It took them 22 years, until the end of World War II in 1946, to begin rebuilding. They started by relaunching their 160 square-foot back porch under a new brand called "In the Garage." Despite most of the work being done by family members at this time, it wasn't until the 1950s that the company began to see growth, although it remained at a smaller scale. Fuente's sons Carlos and Arturo Jr. even helped out after school by sweeping the floors and rolling.
OWNERSHIP TRANSFERRED TO THE SON CARLOS
Artur's son Carlos had contracted Polio at age 12 but thankfully survived. Unfortunately, he left school before graduating and began working full-time at a small cigar factory. In 1958, Artur transferred company ownership to Carlos Sr., who was ambitious and hardworking. He focused on selling cigars to the Hispanic market and gradually expanded his business.
INTRODUCTION OF NEW TOBACCO IN CIGARS - THE RISE OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Before 1962, Cuban Tobacco was used to produce cigars. However, following the implementation of the Cuban Embargo, the whole tobacco leaf supply chain was disrupted, causing the company to seek new sources of tobacco for blending cigars. As a result, they began purchasing tobacco leaves from other regions, including Colombia. In 1970, Carlos Sr. partnered with the burgeoning Nicaraguan cigar industry and began growing tobacco in Nicaragua.
When the Sandinista Revolution occurred, Don Carlos faced another setback. However, he took decisive action and mortgaged his house to raise capital. He then went to Dominican City and established the Tabacalera Fuente tobacco company in Santiago, which proved profitable.
COMPANY IN THE 21ST CENTURY
In 2010, according to a report, the company became the top cigar brand worldwide after experiencing significant growth. Nonetheless, the annual production was 30 million cigars.
All cigars were made traditionally at the time, but the producers needed to be innovative and stand out from competitors. As a result, the Arturo Fuente Hemingway line of father cigars was created, using authentic African Cameroon and a unique Figurado shape. Following the success of the Hemingway line father cigars, a new brand was rolled in honor of his grandfather, the Tabacalera A. Fuente founder, Don Carlos Fuente Sr.
Although they produced high-quality handmade cigars, they faced challenges finding Tobacco Leaf wrappers equivalent to Cuban wrappers. Additionally, some people claimed that Dominican cigars were inferior to Cuban cigars and that they could not create a high-end cigar factory that could compete with them using Cuban tobacco. Carlos Sr. was joined by his son Carlos Carlito Fuente Jr., who is highly skilled and devoted. They accepted the challenge with his father's backing and established Chateau de La Fuente. They set up the empire of Fuente Fuente Opus X, a Dominican Puro, in the Santiago region, which is far from other cigar manufacturers and growers. The entire Fuente family cultivates the tobacco used for their products.
The company has tobacco farms in Dominican City, producing high-quality cigars. In 2004, Andy García, a Cuban-American actor and film director, contacted Carlos Fuente Jr. to request permission to film scenes for his movie "The Lost City" in the Fuente tobacco fields. The Fuente family pays great attention to detail and is known for using advanced 2-way humidification devices called Boveda to pack premium tobacco in their cigar boxes.
Additionally, the Ashton brand of cigars was established in 1985 by Robert Levin of Philadelphia and is manufactured by Tabacalera A Fuente.
Arturo Fuente produces some cigars sold by J.C. Newman Cigar Company in Tampa, Florida. In exchange, Newman is responsible for producing all of Arturo Fuente's machine-made tobacco products and distributing Arturo Fuente cigars in the US.
